Young Horses Shine at SIHS - Since 2009, Welcome Week at the Sacramento International Horse Show has featured Young Horse Suitability classes, and this year’s $20,000 SIHS Young Horse Suitability Championship attracted a competitive group of talented jumpers in four age divisions.
The Young Horse Suitability Champions were determined over three days and four rounds of jumping. The first two rounds were judged for style, technique and suitability earlier in the week, and all horses and riders came back today on a clean slate for the two-round jumper competition.
In the 4 Year Old Suitability, Matt Archer of Shady Lane Farm in Alamo, CA rode Judy Straden’s W.T. Lawry to a decisive win. While Kristen Strain led Round 1 with Ship to Shore, Archer came into the final round in the high point position with W.T. Lawry on the merits of his consistent first two round scores. Archer then piloted his talented mount to the overall win after topping Round 3 and the jumpoff.
“I am thrilled to be part of such a great program, and so thankful to the owners for letting me ride such a gifted young horse,” commented Archer. “He’s a wonderful solid 4 year old with great scope, that was bred here in America by Barb Ellison and Wild Turkey Farm. Riding him to the win meant a lot to me, because one of my first professional jobs was grooming for Barb years ago.”
